Purpose statements and sustainability goals are everywhere, yet few companies have truly transformed to meet 21st-century social and environmental needs.


🔹 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:


An authentic purpose fuels employee motivation, entrepreneurial behaviour and stronger business results—but only if it’s seen as genuine, not just a business tactic.



🔹 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞:


Sustainability efforts are often siloed among senior leaders or specialized teams, leading to a disconnect and ineffective execution.



🔹 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞?


Once the company defined its purpose (why we exist) in terms of the positive impact it seeks to make - not just the corporate vision and mission, the next steps are:

1. 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬


These define what to solve for in support of the purpose, both through internal efforts (aspirations) and wider collective action and partnership (quests) 



To do so


◆ Involve a wide range of stakeholders.


◆ Separate foundational sustainability goals (e.g., water and energy use) from aspirations and quests, assigning accountability for foundational goals to functional leaders.


◆ Define financial and social impact metrics for each.



2. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬


◆ Engage middle management as co-owners in defining how to realize goals.


◆ Launch employee awareness initiatives and training.


◆ Identify change champions—employees and managers who actively support sustainability goals, aspirations, and quests.



3. 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠


◆ Connect personal purpose to corporate purpose by encouraging employees to share how they make a difference.


◆ Engage employees in individual goal setting and allow them to contribute input and choices.


◆ Integrate purpose into job descriptions, performance evaluations, and rewards. For example, ensure at least 20% of bonuses are tied to business aspirations and quests.

Purpose isn’t just a statement—it’s an operating system. Companies that embed it into their culture, strategy, and incentives will not only drive impact but also unlock long-term business success.
